As a member of one of the oldest ISA sections in the world (chartered in 1946), we hope you will take full advantage of the member benefits highlighted in this website. The area around Richland centers around the Hanford Reach, a free-flowing section of the Columbia River—”Chiawana” (Big River)—(around 51 miles long), in eastern Washington. Upstream is Priest Rapids Dam and downstream is the McNary Dam. As early as 10,000 years ago, the ancestral inhabitants of today’s Wanapum People, Yakama Nation, Confederated Tribes of the Colville, Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Reservation, and the Nez Perce fished, hunted, and collected a variety of natural resources in the area.
In 1943, the Manhattan Project, designed to build the atomic bombs of WWII, came to Richland & built the B Reactor, the first full-scale reactor in the world, producing weapons-grade plutonium, in just 13 months. Plutonium from the B Reactor was used in the world’s first nuclear explosion, July 16, 1945, at the Alamogordo Bombing and Gunnery Range in New Mexico. B Reactor plutonium was used in the “Fat Man” bomb dropped on Nagasaki, Japan, on August 9, 1945.

Come to this mid-July lunch and learn to find out what the ISA Richland Section has planned for the coming year and meet the latest Richland Section Board Member, Ryan Beesley, CAP, Regional Engineering Manager for Concept Systems. Ryan will introduce himself to all y’all and give a virtual tour of the only underground coal mine (Signal Peak Energy in Roundup, MT) in the state of Montana where he worked as a second generation coal miner. He’ll answer the question: “Are coal mines still a viable energy source?”

As a non-profit organization, the support of volunteers is critical to the success of the ISA Richland Section. We are extremely fortunate to have an incredible team of volunteers and volunteer leaders, but we are always looking for more people to help. Think about signing up and volunteering for an upcoming event - it's a great way to meet fellow automation professionals and a nice way to give back to the automation community.
