  • ISA Birmingham Section Technical Meeting January 2022

The next meeting of the ISA Birmingham Section will take place at 4:00 PM, on Tuesday, January 11, 2022, and it will be an online Zoom Session.  The need is still evident for the section to conduct virtual meetings for the present time, and the hope is to resume face to face meetings later this year.

Our speaker for this kick-off meeting for 2022, will be Jim Key, PE, and the topic will be “Characterizing Control valves for Better Control”, coming from an unusual direction, which will be interesting to everyone.

    Abstract:

Often, engineers struggle with the remnants of past design decisions, cost cutting, and just plain misunderstanding of how control algorithms, process equipment and final control elements affect the economic performance of a facility.  The challenge is knowing how to handle the system you’re given. Some knowledge of process flow dynamics can enable the engineer to tune a standard Proportional/ Integral/ Derivative, PID, algorithm and maintain good control and performance.

The intent of this presentation is to show how, by re-characterizing a control valve’s installed Cv flow characteristics to linear, a PID controller will need only one set of tuning parameters to control a process; even if the underlying process flow dynamics are non-linear.

You do not want to miss this online meeting and presentation, which will qualify for continuing education credit in the form of Professional Development Hours (PDH).  Please contact your associates and encourage their attendance at this session – a Zoom connection link will be sent out to everyone later, for admission to the meeting.
