ShakeAlert Earthquake Early Warning - How it Works and Case Studies

    AWWA/IAS Webinar

    Wednesday Dec 8, 2021, 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM PST

Use the registration link below – Anyone can attend this event in MS Teams format

What is the United States Geological Survey (USGS)’ ShakeAlert® Earthquake Early Warning system? How does it work—from the seismic sensor level to the whole alert network in California , Oregon (OR), and Washington (WA)? How has one licensed operator been applying it to SCADA systems for water utilities and others across OR and WA? How could you use ShakeAlert to provide critical minutes of action ahead of the Big One? Come for the answers to these questions and for 20 minutes of your own questions about ShakeAlert.

This webinar is jointly sponsored by the American Waterworks Association (AWWA) Pacific Northwest Section Engineering Committee and the International Society of Automation (ISA). Special thanks to our guest speaker, Dr. Reusch, representing the University of Washington (UW)  through her role as ShakeAlert Coordinator for the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network (PNSN).

    Speakers

Mouse Marie Reusch, PhD | ShakeAlert Coordinator, Pacific Northwest Seismic Network

Mouse is the Regional Buildout Coordinator for ShakeAlert at PNSN on the UW, Seattle Campus.  Since February 2020, she has overseen the installation in OR and WA of over 150 seismic stations that now contribute their data to the Earthquake Early Warning system.  Mouse has been at the PNSN for more than 4 years after spending the previous 6 years in New Mexico working for a seismometer lending library and installing seismic stations in North and South America, Africa, and Antarctica.

Taylor Stockton, PE | Project Manager, RH2 Engineering

Taylor’s 14 years of broad water industry design work and resilience planning work provide the context for his role as RH2’ ShakeAlert® earthquake early warning system projects lead in OR and WA. As a member of RH2's seismic resilience team, Taylor has lead earthquake‑resistant ductile iron pipe design, Portland regional drinking water resilience planning, and AWIA risk and resilience assessments and emergency response plans. His design work experience includes several reservoir projects and other projects—mostly in the northwest—ranging from source to distribution. Due to Taylor’s mechanical engineering undergrad and early career work in automation he remembers enough about controls and telemetry to coordinate with real controls professionals for ShakeAlert installations.
