During this webinar, Mr. Austin Bryan, Senior Engineer at Kenexis, will discuss the hazards associated with thermal runaway reactions and various design considerations and requirements for energy storage systems to mitigate the risk associated with such events. Background information:
Is green energy safe? As the energy grid moves further toward renewable sources to generate the world's power requirements, energy storage becomes increasingly critical to infrastructure. Lithium-ion batteries are an attractive option for storage, with an energy density and cycling characteristics that provide advantages over other technologies. However, Li-ion batteries also have several unique safety concerns due to the potential for thermal runaways, which are self-heating reactions that can result in the venting of both flammable and toxic gases and fire.

About the Speaker:
Mr. Bryan has extensive experience in risk analysis, risk reduction, and reliability engineering - specifically as it relates to process safety management for industries that manage risks related to chemicals or stored energy. Mr. Bryan has an M.S. in Chemical Engineering, is a certified ISA/IEC 61511 SIS expert, and is an instructor for ISA EC-52 Advanced Safety Integrity Level (SIL) Selection and ISA EC-54 Advanced Design and SIL Verification Courses.
