    Overview of the DOE CCUS R&D Program

    Mr. Mark Ackiewicz is the Director for the Division of Emissions Controls and Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCUS) Research and Development (R&D) at the Department of Energy (DOE). He is responsible for planning, management, and administration of the division’s R&D portfolio. In this role, he leads a team of scientists and engineers that are collaborating and working domestically and internationally with industry, national laboratories, and universities on developing advanced and transformational CCUS technologies. Prior to his current position, Mr. Ackiewicz also served as DOE’s Carbon Capture Program Manager and Fuels Program Manager.

    Before joining DOE in 2007, he worked as a consultant, providing technical, analytical, and strategic planning services to the DOE and its technical research programs. Early in his career, Mark worked in the private sector in various industrial research and engineering positions, where he was responsible for process development and scale-up activities.

    Mark is a 2016-2017 White House Leadership Development Fellow alumnus. He has a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Johns Hopkins University, and a Master’s in Engineering Management from George Washington University.

    Summary of Presentation

    The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) research and development (R&D) program advances efforts to reduce the cost of carbon dioxide (CO2) capture; discover ways to utilize CO2; and safely and securely store captured CO2 in geologic formations. The technologies developed and pilot-scale tests conducted through these programs will have applicability to power-generation and industrial sources, including cement, steel, refining, hydrogen, and ethanol production. The technologies will also be used to directly remove CO2 from the atmosphere. Through these CCUS R&D efforts, DOE is working with its domestic and international partners to enable CCUS as a viable carbon management option for reducing CO2 emissions on a commercial scale. This presentation will highlight some of the advancements and successes of the program, provide an update on the current status of CCUS in the United States and globally, and give an update on the current status and direction of DOE’s CCUS R&D program.
