    “Water Security Test Bed"
    Thursday, March 18 – 4:00 to 5:00 p.m.

The Water Security Test Bed (WSTB) is located at the Idaho National Laboratory, 42 miles west of Idaho Falls, ID. The WSTB is designed as a system for testing contamination and decontamination scenarios in a municipal distribution system, as well as service disruptions due to cyberattacks. The piping system is constructed from full size, commercial components commonly found in municipal distribution networks. The isolation and scale of the system allow for testing at scale that could not be done in a working municipal water system. To date, testing has focused primarily on biological and chemical contamination scenarios. Going forward, testing will incorporate a focus on resilience and recovery from cyber intrusions such as the Oldsmar, Florida attack in February of this year. This presentation will describe the system, discuss the spectrum of testing completed to date, and plans for future expansion and testing.

Bio: Steve Reese is a researcher and project manager at Idaho National Laboratory. Over the past 20+ years at INL he has worked on a variety of waste decontamination/disposal technology demonstrations, as well as developing laser-based techniques for examining the microstructure of materials. Presently, he operates the Water Security Test Bed, a large-scale mock-up of a municipal drinking water distribution system used for evaluating recovery from loss of service incidents. Steve holds a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering and is a licensed professional engineer.
